Part 2:
Chapter 12 contains health information for college students in the areas of nutrition, avoiding addictions, protection from disease, getting enough sleep and dealing with stress. It is based on the premise that we will be living longer in the 21st Century. Below are some facts covered in this chapter.
Smoking causes lung cancer.
One out of three Americans is overweight or obese.
Illegal drug use is addictive and limits success.
Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.
Not practicing monogamous or safe sex can lead to STD’s including AIDS.
Knowing this information, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?
For full credit you must post a comment regarding one of the above statements or any subject covered in Chapter 12. I am looking for well thought out comments with at least 2 supportive statements.

-Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.
ReplyDeleteNot getting enough sleep can lead to a multitude of not-so-great things, such as you may not live as long, you'll eat more and weigh more,it shrinks your brain, and will increase blood pressure, it increases risks of getting sick,it can worsen your memory,it makes you cranky, and you will lack on energy.

Smoking Tobacco: A Leading Cause of Preventable Illness and Death
ReplyDeleteOne out of every five deaths in the United States is related to smoking. In the U.S. one in every four adults smoke and one in every three teenagers smokes. The decision to stop smoking is very difficult because it is very addictive.Only 20% of smokers who decide to quit smoking are successfull and those who do quit smoking can increase their life span by as much as 10 years. Smoking causes alot of problems for the body such as damaging the respiratory system, heart, circulatory system, and can lead to birth defects during pregnancy.

ReplyDeleteOne out if three Americans is overwieght or obese:
ReplyDeleteAmerica is now a country filled with these fake and processed foods that make people people more obese. Maybe the reason this still continues is that people like thier greasy food and sometimes it's cheaper than other foods. We as people should try to eat healthy but it is okay to eat Macdonalds or Taco Bell once in a while.
Great, Huiche!(: Here is a follow up question open to all PD100 students..What are some suggestions you have for those (including myself) who crave the greasy and processed foods?
ReplyDeleteSmoking causes lung cancer
ReplyDeleteSmoking tobacco is the major risk factor for lung cancer. In the United States, about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80% of lung cancer deaths in women are due to smoking. People who quit smoking have a lower risk of lung cancer, but their risk are still higher than the person who never smoked. Smoking can cause many problems for their own body like causing damage on the heart, respiratory system, circulatory system and many others.

ReplyDeleteNot Getting Enough Sleep: Negatively Affect Learning and even Health?
ReplyDeleteFor many sleep is seen as a necessity but for college students it is seen as a problem because it takes away from study time. What would happen if I missed a few hours of sleep? A grade is more important. The thoughts similar to those cross the mind of college students, yet they do not know how it is negatively affecting their learning. Without the proper amount of sleep the mind is not fully focused and many things are impaired, such as, long term memory and concentration. Sleep also allows for the mind to have the best operation that it can in order to store the necessary items (long term memory), and allows for the replenishment of energy supplies that are necessary for daily functions. Not only does sleep deprivation affect the school career but it affects the health of students as well. This is because, it makes a person less energetic, increase mood swings, harm brain cells, weaken the immune system, cause more stress, impair memory and grow fat instead of muscle in the body. So the next time the thought of ignoring sleep, think of how it can affect your schooling and your health.

ReplyDeleteIllegal drug use is addictive and limits success.
ReplyDeleteThe use of illegal drugs is easily seen at social parties, raves, and even school. Unfortunately, many drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy are addictive and make first-time users wanting the rush one more time. According to a survey conducted an estimated 22 million people suffer from dependency and abuse drugs. This problem has gotten so bad that addiction is now considered a disease. I agree that is it a disease, as addiction controls people's lives. Everyone asks why they do drugs? Well for some, it is an escape from reality and helps them cope with their situations at hand. Others, use drugs for recreational purposes such as being with friends believing the drug will make them more sociable even with the risks. In the end the risks can be told over and over again, yet they will keep doing the same thing because of the rush and their addiction.

ReplyDeleteMany people do not have safe sex which may lead to STDS like AIDS. AIDS and HIV are most commonly found in teenagers among the ages of 16-24. The second most common cause of death for people among 20-24 is AIDS. People, especially teenagers are getting these diseases due to three reasons: they become sexually active at a young age, they have many sex partners, or they have unprotected sex. But why do teens still have unprotected sex even if they know their lives could be on the line? Many people say it is due to peer pressure and not being prepared in the "heat of the passion."Another reason couuld be that people think nothing like that could ever happen to them.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Cassandra!(;
ReplyDeleteI don't know about why everyone else abuses food, but I can speak from personal experiences. I know I use food to ease anxiety because it works. Food soothes me. It feels good! But using/abusing food doesn't solve the problems. In fact, it makes things worse! The problems or work I'm avoiding are always there waiting for me . . . and I've made things worse by overeating. Indigestion. Weight gain. Guilt. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteEveryone in my family uses/abuses food. We've all gone up and down the "weight gain trail" - some worse than others. Food, unlike friends, is always there. Food doesn't "answer back". Food doesn't call me on my "stuff". Food is always there . . . amazing how something like food can be like a drug.
Food hasn't been the best answer to stress, but it worked. And since it did work, I became habituated to turning to food instead of facing problems. It's an ongoing problem. Sometimes I'm better with food, sometimes worse. But now that I'm conscious that I "use" food, I'm better able to make choices . . .
Peace, love and adobo grease!
Henry
Thank you Prof. Aronson!(: So in summary, using food as a way to soothe can be due to how you were raised to look at food. Remember what we covered on Tuesday? How we make sense of our environment is dependant on our family and society. Another argument for over eating especially processed foods are that these foods are addicting. Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteNow these days, many people are missing out on sleep because of school or work. Especially college students because they tend to cram things for exams, when they should be enjoying their life but also they should try balancing their work and school. Sleeping is very important because if you don't sleep then it becomes harder to learn, to read, and to study. It has been said by Nobel Laureate Francis Crick, who studies the brain, that by sleeping you let the brain rest and erase unnecessary material, process experiences, and regain energy. The following quote is stated by Nobel Laureate Francis Crick in which he states his belief of being the purpose of sleep "...the purpose of sleep is to allow the brain to 'take out the trash' ". Also not getting enough sleep can cause a decline in mental performance. Colonel Gregory Belenky studies the effects of sleeplessness on military personnel, and he has researched that "...mental performance declined by 25 percent in every 24-hour sleepless period". Due to the lack of sleep you have difficulties making decisions, in paying attention to detailed things and to react to new information. It has been researched that college students who stay up all night by studying for exams, end up suffering from the same declines in mental performance as sleep-deprived soldiers. When you deprive yourself from sleep you have negative impacts on your health, such as you can suffer from depression, your irritability increases, and you become less energetic. Researchers have said to sleep eight-hours a day, no more than that because it can alter your sleep patterns and it can lead to fatigue and other health problems. Therefore it is very important to not miss out on sleep and instead get enough sleep.

ReplyDeleteMany people around the world suffer from sleep deprivation. But many people dont know the negative side effects it can have on their body. Sleep deprivation can reduce an individuals glucose metabolism by as much as 40 percent. Having a low glucose metabolism is very bad because thats where the human body consumes all of its energy. Being sleep deprived also lower levels of human growth, which is important for muscle repair. Without this, it makes it harder for our muscles to repair and condition themselves. People who dont get enough sleep are also more prone to infections, and heal significantly slower than the average person who gets enough sleep. Lastly, being sleep deprived can also effect how the human brain stores information. Without sleep it leaves the brain very scattered and confused, which makes it hard for the body to function under these circumstances. Having enough sleep is important on a day to day basis, because it is the foundation of our day.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Alexis!(;
ReplyDeleteMany people continue to smoke simply because it's highly addictive due to Nicotine, which is a powerfully addictive drug. Smokers are in a constant battle to maintain a narrow range of nicotine in their blood stream. Every time the smoker's serum nicotine level falls below the minimum limit, they experience drug withdrawal. They become tense, irritable, anxious, and in some cases, even show physical symptoms. They don't enjoy feeling these withdrawals so the only thing that will relieve these symptoms is a cigarette. The nicotine loss is then replenished and the smoker feels better. This is why it is very difficult for people to quit smoking.

ReplyDeleteIllegal drug use is addictive and limits success :
ReplyDeletePainkillers, such as Vicodin and OxyContin, are opiates, which is a substance used in medicine to increase sleep and reduce pain. These types of painkillers, when taken inappropriately, can cause addiction because they impact the same areas of the brain as heroin. Sometimes these drugs get into the wrong hands of people who abuse them or might even just obtain them to sell and make a quick profit. I suggest that the doctors who prescribe these painkillers, keep a closer supervision on the people they decide to distribute these drugs too.
omg, I have no clue why it says unknown but its me, Jamari Greene from OHS.
ReplyDeleteNo problem Jamari, definitely prescription drug abuse needs to be part of the conversation. Great job!(;
ReplyDelete-illegal drug use is addictive and limits success
ReplyDeleteEven though drug users know the facts of drug abuse, they are usually more concerned about getting their next fix. It is common amongst drug users to believe that they can just stop at any time, and most do not believe that they are addicted at all. Drug users could also believe that the drugs they are taking are not as harmful as they thought it would be because the worst has not occured to them, and they do not realize it because the effects of the drugs
... Could cloud their judgement and not realize what is being done to them physically and psycologically. They also do not see that their body is developing a sense of need for that drug after using it even just once. People use illegal drugs simply because they do not realize the consequences and do not believe the worst will happen to them because "nothing" has happened to them.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! Another follow up question for the class....So how does one help someone who is addicted drugs?
ReplyDeleteNot getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.
ReplyDeleteNot sleeping has a huge role on you. Without it, your brain doesn't function as well as it should which affects you learning in school. It also makes a person sleepy during the day so they could not exercise or stay in shape.
So Joe, since you posted at 12:31am..I assume you are speaking from experience?!(;
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the only way to have safe sex is to use a condom. the book says "Dont have sex.This is truly 'safe sex'" but its goning to happen sooner or later.The book also says to be sure that the person you are having sex is only having sex with you, but again there is no real way to tell if that person is only sleeping with you.That's why I believe if you wear a condom you should be fine
ReplyDeleteChris, but even condoms are not 100% effective. Also, you are right about not knowing if your partner is monogamous but if they are not they are also putting you at risk for whatever they may come in contact with.
ReplyDelete-Smoking causes lung cancer:
ReplyDeleteEach year, 4 million people die because of diseases caused by tobacco smoking. Tobacco smoking is the most important cause of diseases worldwide. Tobacco smoke contains chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers, breathing even a little tobacco smoke can be harmful. The health problems that are caused from smoking are that is harms every organ in the body and decreases overall health. Smoking leads to cancer, and especially lung cancer. Smoking can cause diseases, health problems, cancer and even death.

ReplyDeleteSmoking Causes Lung Cancer
ReplyDeleteSmoking causes lung cancer, because many human beings die of the cause of cancer. Lung cancer is the number 1 death in america. 90% of lung cancer is due to smoking. In estimated of 171,900 cases if lung cancer occurred and about 157,200 people died because of cancer. tobacco kills cells in your body, and causes the cells to grow to rapidly, or abnormal.
