Class Syllabus

PD 101: Orientation to College
Professor Lisa Rodriguez

Course Description

This course is designed to assist students in obtaining skills and knowledge necessary to reach their educational objectives. Topics include career exploration, study and test taking, campus resources, educational planning, and motivation.

Course Objectives
  • Practice using college catalogs and class schedules to better understand the Higher Education System including: college procedures and policies, campus programs, course requirements, terminology, and deadlines
  • Understand the Southwestern College campus and student resources which aid in student success
  • Strengthen study strategies and learning skills for college success and lifelong learning
Attendance

Attendance is absolutely essential to your success in this class, you may be dropped if you have 4 or more absences or excessive tardiness. Excessive tardiness can add up to 1 missed day, you need to pay particular attention to this if you have a habit of being late.

Student Conduct
  • Respect and consideration of classmates is expected at all times
  • Cheating or any form of plagiarism of any type will not be tolerated
  • No drinking or eating
  • Cell phone use, text messaging and any other communication devices will be turned off in class
  • No reading or working on lessons of other classes
  • Sleeping in class will not be tolerated
  • Disruptive behavior in class will result in temporary expulsion, then possible permanent expulsion
Academic Accommodations

Academic accommodations are available for students with identified disabilities. Please notify your professor if you have been diagnosed with a learning disability, so that the appropriate accommodations can be made.

Professor Expectations
  • Arrive to all classes on time
  • Show Respect for Instructor and classmates by listening
  • Appreciate Diversity
  • You are responsible for keeping up with the course, refer to your class calendar
  • If you will be missing a class, see Instructor regarding make up assignments
Course Evaluation

Homework                       =  25 points
Attendance/ Participation  =  25 points
College Inventory             =  10 points
Quiz #1                            =  20 points
Final                                 =  20 points
Personal Statement            = 100 points

        Total Points             = 200 points

To receive credit for this course you must have at least 140 points!!!
